Creating an eco-friendly kitchen doesn't always require a major overhaul. By making small changes when you can, focusing on everyday items you use most, you can significantly reduce your environmental footprint. Here are some tips to make your kitchen more sustainable. I will also attach some of my favorite ecofriendly options from my shop at the bottom of the article.
Reusable Storage Containers
Choose reusable storage options made from glass, stainless steel, or BPA-free plastic. Glass jars are my favorite as they are versatile and can be used for storing everything from your lunch to dry goods and spices. They also look nice on countertops and have a sophisticated feel.
Minimize Single-Use Plastics
Replace plastic bags with reusable cloth bags or containers. Choose reusable food wraps made from beeswax or silicone instead of plastic wrap. Of course, we can't completely eliminate plastic altogether, but we can try our best to minimize when we can.
Upcycle Jars and Containers
Save those glass jars and containers that originally held jams, sauces, or pickles. Make sure to regularly go through your fridge and realize that jam from 2015 is probably done for. Throw them right in the dishwasher and use them for things like grains, nuts, and snacks. These are also great for meal prepping salads and other smaller meals like overnight oats. Label them with chalkboard paint or reusable tags if you really want to get fancy.
Declutter and Donate
Regularly declutter your kitchen cabinets and drawers and get rid of items you no longer use or need. Donate usable kitchenware, appliances and utensils. This not only reduces clutter but also promotes reuse within your community.
Meal Planning and Portion Control
Reduce food waste by planning meals in advance and portioning ingredients accordingly. Invest in airtight containers for storing leftovers or prepped ingredients. Mason jars are also great for storing soups, salads, and smoothies in portion-controlled servings.
DIY Kitchen Cleaners
Make your own eco-friendly kitchen cleaners using simple ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, lemon and essential oils. These natural cleaners are effective, non-toxic, and reduce the use of harsh chemicals.
Herb Garden in the Kitchen
Grow your own herbs in a small indoor garden or on a sunny windowsill. Fresh herbs add flavor to dishes and reduce the need for packaged herbs that often come with excessive plastic packaging.
Eco-Friendly Dishwashing
Use dishwasher detergent and soap that are free from phosphates and harsh chemicals. Because who wants to drink in a cup that has a possible layer of bleach clinging to it?
Compost Food Waste
Now I understand this might not be for everyone, but composting reduces landfill waste while also providing amazing nutrient rich soil for gardening. So, if you garden and can do this, I highly recommend it. You can get a small composting bin for your kitchen and throw all your scraps right in there as you go.
Support Local and Sustainable Brands
When purchasing new kitchen items or appliances, choose products from companies committed to sustainability and ethical practices. Look for certifications such as Fair Trade, USDA Organic, or Energy Star.
By making these small but meaningful changes in your kitchen, you can contribute to a greener lifestyle and inspire others to do the same. Sustainability is a journey, and every step counts towards creating a healthier planet for us and future generations to come.
