The Art of Organizing Small Spaces

The Art of Organizing Small Spaces

Think about organizing your home like solving a puzzle, with each piece fitting together in its own unique way. But here's the thing: not every solution works for every home. Every space has its own quirks and challenges, making it important to embrace the diversity of different organizing approaches. However, there's one thing most of us can agree on: clear, tidy spaces make for happier homes. Last year, I moved into a tiny, quaint home with so much character that I absolutely fell in love. The only problem? It is SO small with a lack of closet and storage space. I had to get super crafty and find all the ways to fit everything. I also cut down on SO much stuff that I had, and I was glad to do that; it felt invigorating. I became somewhat of a minimalist. I only buy what I need now and if I know it will have a good use and space for it. If I buy new clothes, I make sure to get rid of some, and so on. Below, I've put together a list of some of the most useful organization tips and tricks out there.

Over the door organizers

Maximize vertical space by hanging over the door organizers on closet, bedroom or bathroom doors. These organizers are perfect for storing shoes, accessories, cleaning supplies, or toiletries. Most options cost very little and they’re minimal installation effort which is also great for renters.

Open Shelving

If you’re limited on cabinet space and dare to display your kitchenware like art, go for it!

Collapsible Food Storage Containers

Storing your food storage containers can be one of the last things you think about when finding spots for everything else, which is why I was so excited to incorporate them in my very own shop. I’ll be sure to include the link on the bottom of the page.

Cabinet Doors

Attach hooks or adhesive organizers to the inside of cabinet doors to store pot lids, measuring cups, cleaning supplies, etc. This simple hack helps free up cabinet shelf space and keeps commonly used items easily accessible. They even have spice racks that you can use for this hack! I do recommend you measure and make sure you can open and close your cabinets before hanging, I unfortunately learned this the hard way.

Utilize Cabinet Tops

Make use of the space on top of cabinets or closets by storing items in decorative baskets or bins. This hidden storage solution is perfect for storing seasonal items, infrequently used appliances, or extra linens. You can also store larger pots that you don’t use too often up there, which I'm guilty of.

Food Organizing Bins

For your refrigerator, your snack cabinet or wherever in between, food storage organizers are a great option, especially if you have kids. They keep everything visible and easy to grab while also looking super cute and organized.

Hang a pot rack

Free up cabinet and counter space in kitchens by hanging pots and pans on a ceiling-mounted pot rack OR even just a simple wall one. This not only adds a decorative element to the kitchen but also makes cookware easily accessible while maximizing storage space.

Aesthetically Pleasing Countertop Storage

I am very limited on counter space, but I make it work! On my counters, I have beautiful glass and wood jars that bring such a vibe into my space. Things I keep in these jars usually include coffee, sugar, dried pasta, etc. I also have a cute basket that houses things like measuring spoons, a cookbook and a meat thermometer. I have a beautiful acrylic tea storage holder to showcase my teas and a few other things like my wonderful air fryer which I cook most of my meals in since I store my pots and pans in the oven!

Use a Folding Desk

A folding desk has been one of the best space saving purchases I’ve made for my home. I keep it up most of the time because I use it a lot, but when I need more space for company, the top pops right off, the legs fold in and I can store it right behind a door. You can also get one to mount on the wall that folds down as well. I have a small rolling cart under the desk where I keep my office supplies.

Nesting Furniture

Nesting tables, stools, or chairs that can be stacked together when not in use are a huge space saving solution. These versatile pieces are perfect for small living spaces and can be easily rearranged to accommodate guests or activities.

Invest in Furniture with Built-In Storage

Choose furniture pieces with built-in storage such as ottomans with hidden compartments, bed frames with under-bed drawers, or coffee tables with lift-top storage. These multifunctional pieces help maximize storage while minimizing clutter.

Downsize Bulky Items

Consider downsizing bulky items such as dish racks, laundry hampers and big baskets. Opt for collapsible or foldable versions that can be easily stored when not in use to free up valuable counter or floor space. I LOVE my collapsible laundry basket that I keep tucked neatly away next to my washing machine when not in use.

Downsize and Declutter

Regularly decluttering and downsizing belongings can significantly free up space in your home. Donate or sell items you no longer need or use. I always have a bin or a bag around that’s meant for donation and when you live in such a small space, you’ll see how quickly it fills up with things you just don't need. Also consider digitalizing paperwork, I use a scanner app that I absolutely love.

Peg boards

Install peg boards on walls in kitchens, home offices, or craft rooms to keep frequently used items easily accessible and organized. Use hooks, baskets, and shelves to customize the peg board storage based on your needs.

Create a Command Center

Designate a small wall space near the entryway as a command center to keep keys, mail, and other essentials organized. Install hooks for keys, a mail organizer or basket for incoming mail, and a small shelf or magnetic board for reminders and to-do tasks.

Stackable Storage Bins

Utilize extra space in closets, under sinks, or in cabinets by using stackable storage bins or crates. These bins are great for storing clothing, shoes, cleaning supplies, pantry items, or toiletries while maximizing every inch of available space. Clear bins are also great so you can see what's inside.

Utilize Under-Sink Space

Make the most of under-sink storage by using stackable bins, sliding drawers, or adjustable shelving units.

Label Everything

Use labels or clear containers to clearly identify the contents of storage bins, baskets, or jars. This not only helps keep items organized but also makes it easier to find what you need in a small space.

Tension Rods

Install tension rods inside cabinets or under sinks to create extra storage space to hang cleaning supplies and other things. Tension rods can be used in closets to create additional shelf space for clothing or linens. They can also be used with a curtain to conceal a storage area that you don’t want showcased.

 Happy Organizing!

I found this article to be really helpful! I recently moved into my new apartment and had tons of stuff in boxes with no idea where to put them without having things look like a mess. Well, now my apartment looks even better than I imagined. Tremendous value for the first post and I am now subscribed so I don’t miss anything.
